Jars Jars Jars Jars!
what kind of jars do I need?
what size?
what kind of lids?
what about cost?

When you decide to drink raw milk the first thing you need is appropriate storage!
Many people already know that glass makes the safest storage for raw milk. this is because it is more insulated and also because it is non porous therefore it will not hold as much bacteria.
So what kind of jars?  Glass
What size jars? well this is dependent apon how much milk you will be using.
you only want to take half your milk out of the refrigerator at a time. your jars should be large enough to hold that amount. therefore if you have 1 gallon of milk optimally you would use 2 glass half gallon jars.
What size? 1/2 as large as your amount. 2) 1/2 gallon jars per gallon of milk.
What kind of lids? Plastic lids are better than metal because metal rusts. Ball makes very nice food grade lids for wide mouth jars. These are perfect or milk.
what kind of Lids? Plastic
What about cost? well many people use pickle jars this is a very inexpensive way to get nice glass jars however they do have metal lids.
you can purchase many different types of jars from many different places I like to use 1/2 gallon ball mason jars with plastic lids.

all things mustbe kept clean and dry even baby cows!

Jars must be clean and dry when they are filled. If the jars are filled and they are not clean and dry, you will get off tasting milk. This is generally harmless however, sometimes smells will indicate bacteria this can be harmful if your jars are filled with fesh milk and the bacteria begins to feast and grow.
So how do I prepare my jars to be filled?
  • if you have a dishwasher, USE IT! it is your best friend.
  •  remember to wash our lids also
  • if you do not have a dishwasher, us hot water and a good sanitizer.
Dawn dish soap, bleach diluted to 200ppm, or vinegar 2tsp to a gallon of water. then allow jars to fully air dry
  • do not store jars with lids on this traps smells instead store them upside down where they can breath. This leaves your jars fresh and dry.
